Restoring Vision, Transforming Lives

In the bustling city of Ibadan, Nigeria, a young girl named Mariam lived in a world shrouded in shadows. A severe cataract clouded her right eye, stealing away the vibrant colors and joyful sights of childhood. At just three years old, her life was already limited, her future uncertain.

Her mother, burdened by financial hardship, watched helplessly as her precious daughter’s world grew dimmer. The cost of the surgery that could restore Mariam’s sight seemed an impossible dream.

But then, a ray of hope pierced the darkness. Through our cataract outreach program in Ibadan, Mariam’s story took a dramatic turn. Skilled surgeons, with compassionate hearts, gifted Mariam the life-changing surgery she desperately needed.

Today, Mariam’s world is ablaze with color. Laughter fills her eyes as she explores the world anew, her future now brimming with possibilities.

This is the power of your support. Together, we can transform lives and bring light to those who need it most.

Our Story

A Simple Vision, A World of Difference:

Imagine a world where everyone—regardless of where they live—can see the beauty around them. This is the vision that drives AL BASAR USA. Since 1989, we’ve worked tirelessly to bring hope, healing, and the gift of sight to underserved communities worldwide.

How It Began:

The spark for AL BASAR USA ignited at an ophthalmology conference in 1989. There, we noticed a troubling trend: many European eye charities were focusing their efforts on select regions, often overlooking the most vulnerable communities in Asia and Africa. This disparity inspired us to take action. Moved by the profound impact of vision care, we set out to create a solution—one that would serve those in greatest need, without discrimination.

From Humble Beginnings to Global Impact:

What started with a single slit lamp has grown into a life-changing force across continents. Today, AL BASAR USA have covered 686 cities across 51 countries in Asia and Africa, with 29 hospitals providing critical eye care. By the end of 2024, our milestones speak to our commitment:

  • 37,141,191 patients treated
  • 2,884,606 eye surgeries performed
  • 2,123,641 eyeglasses distributed
  • 1,342,824 students screened across 3,218 schools in 6 countries

A Legacy of Dedication:

One of our late founding directors once said:
“This shows the sincerity of the directors and workers of this foundation—I congratulate them all.”

These words reflect the spirit of AL BASAR USA. Our journey has had its challenges, but we’ve never wavered—thanks to the unwavering support of countless individuals and organizations. None seek credit, yet all share in the impact.

Our Commitment to Integrity:

AL BASAR USA  is a tax-exempt nonprofit (Federal ID # 92-1804033) registered in Texas. While we maintain operational ties with AL BASAR International Foundation (BIF) through formal agreements for our Cataract Outreach and School Eye Screening Programs, we are governed by an independent board. We adhere strictly to IRS regulations, ensuring our focus remains on our mission—never on political activities or private gain.

Partnerships

Through our ties with BIF, partnerships were instrumental in expanding our reach and impact. By collaborating with local organizations, healthcare providers and global NGOs we’ve strengthened our ability to deliver eye care services, share knowledge, and mobilize resources, bringing us closer to a world free from preventable blindness.
